The 12-Week Goal System: A Free Goal Setting Course

Goal Setting

Most goal advice stops at the moment you write the goal down. That is the easy part. This is a free eight-lesson program that walks you through the twelve weeks after that, when the excitement has worn off and the work is just work.

No signup wall, no video gate, no upsell at lesson four. Every lesson is on this site, in full, and you can work through the whole thing at your own pace with a printable workbook.

Who this is for

This program assumes you have already decided to change something. You are not looking for motivation or a reading list. You want a structure that keeps a goal alive past the point where you normally drop it.

It works best if you have one specific thing you want to accomplish in the next three months: finish a certification, get to a consistent training routine, ship a side project, save a defined amount, rebuild a habit you lost. It works badly if you want to change six things at once, which is exactly what Lesson 1 deals with.

Why twelve weeks

A year is too long to hold your attention and too forgiving. You can lose a month of a year-long goal and tell yourself there is still time, which is how a year quietly disappears. A week is too short to produce anything that matters.

Twelve weeks is long enough to finish something real and short enough that a wasted week actually stings. You can see the end from the beginning, which changes how seriously you treat a Tuesday.

How the program works

Eight lessons, each built around one decision or one system you install. Every lesson ends with a small assignment you finish before moving on. The whole program takes about two hours of reading and roughly three hours of actual work spread across the twelve weeks.

Lessons 1 through 4 are setup. Do these before your first week starts. Lessons 5 through 8 run alongside the twelve weeks themselves.

The lessons

The workbook

Every lesson refers to the same printable goal setting workbook. It is six pages, free, and there is no email required to download it. Print it before Lesson 1 and fill it in as you go, or work in a notebook if you prefer. The structure matters more than the paper.

What this program is not

  • It is not a motivation course. Motivation is unreliable by design. The program is built to work on the days you do not feel like it.
  • It is not a productivity system. There is no inbox, no tagging scheme, no app to configure. If you want to go deeper on that side, start with how to be more productive.
  • It is not a theory course. The lessons tell you what to do. When you want the reasoning behind a step, each lesson links to the deeper guide, starting with the complete guide to goal setting.

Before you start

Two things worth doing in the next ten minutes, because the program works far better with them in place.

  1. Put a date on it. Open a calendar, count twelve weeks forward, and write the end date down somewhere you will see it. A goal without an end date is a preference.
  2. Book the weekly slot now. Twenty minutes, same time every week, recurring. Lesson 5 explains what happens in that slot. Booking it before you need it is the single highest-leverage thing you will do today.

If you are still deciding what the goal should be, spend a few minutes with this list of life goals first, then come back.

Frequently asked questions

Is this goal setting course really free?

Yes. All eight lessons are published on this site in full, the workbook is a free PDF download, and there is no email signup required to read any of it.

How long does the course take?

About two hours of reading and roughly three hours of actual work spread across twelve weeks. Lessons 1 through 4 are setup and take an evening. Lessons 5 through 8 run alongside the twelve weeks.

Do I need to start on a Monday or on the first of the month?

No. Start the day you finish Lesson 4. Waiting for a clean start date is one of the most common ways a goal dies before it begins.

What if I already have a goal written down?

Good. Start at Lesson 2 and check whether your goal has a finish line you cannot argue your way out of. Most written goals fail that test.

Can I run more than one goal through the program at once?

You can, but the program is deliberately built around a single goal for twelve weeks. Running two roughly halves the attention each one gets, and attention is the scarce resource here.

What happens if I miss a week?

Nothing breaks. Lesson 7 exists specifically for that week and gives you a written restart protocol. Missing a week is expected, quitting after missing a week is the actual risk.

Is this the same as the 12 Week Year?

No. This is an independent program built around twelve weeks because that length is long enough to finish something real and short enough that a wasted week is noticeable.
